Woodlands Stud’s five shuttle stallions have arrived on farm ahead of the upcoming breeding season in Australasia. Bettor’s Delight, Sweet Lou, Downbytheseaside, What The Hill and Lather Up all arrived in immaculate condition.

This was an extra special delivery for the stud, with it being champion sire Bettor’s Delight’s final journey as he will now call Woodlands Stud home for life. After 19 years and 37 flights he has handed in his frequent flyer card with IRT and gets to remain in the mild Auckland climates. The 26-year-old arrived in great order and looks set for the season ahead.

It was also the first time that our youngest sire, Lather Up has joined us in New Zealand after being based at Llowalong Farms in Victoria for his first four seasons. He is a true gentleman and settled into the new environment superbly well. He presents breeders with the best opportunity to breed to a World Champion at a very affordable price.

Sweet Lou, Downbytheseaside and What The Hill were all also delivered safely and are set to have another big season in the breeding shed, with their progeny all doing great things on the track. The five sires were welcomed by our resident trotting champion Speeding Spur, who remains at his birthplace and is fantastic value for trotting breeders.

THE BREEDING SEASON IS SET TO COMMENCE AROUND NEW ZEALAND NEXT WEEK AND WE WILL BE SHIPPING TO AUSTRALIA FROM MONDAY 9TH SEPTEMBER

On the track, our sires had another very strong week and are setting some great statistics for 2024.

AMERICAN IDEAL’s Australian progeny are continuing his legacy with some outstanding results for 2024. He has had 60 3-year-old starters for 50 winners so far and 19 Individual 2-year-old winners, putting him second only to Sweet Lou.

He had His 2YO daughter SOHO AMERICANO (Art Major dam) won a heat of the Vicbred Super Series at Bendigo last night, the fastest fillies mile rate of the night in 1:57.5. She is raced by Robert Watson who bred her with G Inwood.

LATHER UP continues to leave talented progeny from his debut crop, he picked up his first New Zealand winner today when his 2-year-old TACT TEVA (Albert Albert dam) won very nicely on debut at Winton. They went a 1:58.2 mile rate in the race and he was the ultimate professional leading for most of the event and running away from his rivals to win under a nice hold. He was bred by the Estate of Bessie Dynes.

DOWNBYTHESEASIDE’s progeny were back making a statement last week. AARDIEBYTHESEASIDE (Christian Cullen dam) picked up another feature race as she paced away for her 6th win in a row and kept her unbeaten record on Australian soil at Gloucester Park on Friday. It was her 13th career win and took her earnings to over $335,000, she was bred and raised at Woodlands Stud.

The Soild Earth Pty Ltd bred LET ME AT IT (Bettor’s Delight dam) was a very eye-catching winner when picking up his maiden win. He was wide early in the race before working forward to sit parked for the remainder of the race and he was too brave for his rivals scoring the win.

WHAT THE HILL got a nice Australian double when the Yabby Dam Farms mare KEAYANG GUCCI (Lindy Lane dam) picked up her fourth win in a row at Bendigo. She moved three wide around he rivals and won by 3.4 metres and going away from them. His 3-year-old son RINGER WELLS (Yankee Spider dam) picked up his maiden win when going from last to first at Ballarat on Thursday. He was bred by MC Family Trust.

What The Hill remains the leading sire of 4-year-olds in New Zealand and is close up on both the 2-year-old and 3-year-old leaderboards as his progeny start to ramp back up ahead of the spring features. He is also having a great season in North America with his crops, especially his 2-year-olds where he has 85 two-year-olds for 30 individual winners with total stakes of $1m to date – you can read more on this by clicking here to go to a recent Harnesslink article.

BETTOR'S DELIGHT continued his dominant way with 22 winners across Australasia. This included a treble at Albion Park when HIGHVIEW SADDLER (In The Pocket dam), BRIAN CHRISTOPHER (Falcon Seelster dam) and PARAMA (Western Ideal dam) all saluted the judge. Brian Christopher picked up his 15th win in a career best mile rate of 1:53.3, he was bred and raised at Woodlands Stud by a group of our loyal employees who sold the colt as a yearling. Parama was bred by Paul Renwick and he scored his 14th win and took his career earnings to over $110,000.

Bettor’s Delight also sired doubles at Gloucester Park on Tuesday and Mildura and Addington on Friday. He remains the leading All Age sire in Australia, New Zealand and North America.

SWEET LOU had another strong week with 19 more wins and doubles at Bathurst on Wednesday and Albion Park, Melton and Alexandra Park on Friday. He is having a great season overall and is the leading sire of both 2-year-olds and 3-year-olds in Australia by individual winners and also 3-year-olds by stakes earnings. He has also sired the most individual winners in New Zealand with a whooping 88 winners, this is equal to Bettor’s Delight and 12 clear of any other sire.
