VALE AMERICAN IDEAL

It is with very heavy hearts and immense sadness that we confirm our World Champion racehorse and dominant dual hemisphere stallion American Ideal passed away in Australia on January 29th, 2024.

Woodlands Stud along with our partners Blue Chip Farm, Brittney Farms and Llowalong Farm mourn the passing of the 22-year-old sire who has been a breed shaping stallion of the 21st century in both hemispheres.

With progeny earnings in excess of $200 million in both hemispheres, American Ideal's legacy is and will be long lasting.

His siring career is one for the ages with dominance over a long period of time in all age groups from juvenile racing to open class. Some of his top Australasian performers include millionaires Copy That, Bling It On, My Hard Copy, Soho Tribeca and Magnificent Storm and talented mares such as The Orange Agent, Allamericanlover and Pelosi to name a few. He is now also making a name as a broodmare sire.

“American Ideal is and will continue to be hugely important genetically here in Australasia and we have been privileged to have had the opportunity to be part of his story worldwide. Stallions of his calibre and demeanour are true heroes of our sport,” said Woodlands Stud’s Co-Director Paul Kenny.

We thank Dr Kath McIntosh for all her love and outstanding care of American Ideal in his final days.

American Ideal was a true gentleman until the end, and beloved by all those who crossed his path. He was a staff favourite and will be greatly missed by us all.

A dominant dual hemisphere sire, the son of Western Ideal was a gun sire on both sides of the equator. With career earnings over $200 million, American Ideal was easily one of the standouts in the stallion shed.

He leaves precocious juvenile speed, blue riband 3YO performers and grand circuit performers – the complete package.

He is the sire of multiple millionaires including Bling It On, My Hard Copy and Soho Tribeca. As well as other top performers such as The Orange Agent, Ideal For Real and Luisanabelle Midfrew.

He is also the sire of the dual (2021 & 2022) New Zealand Trotting Cup winner Copy That who was purchased off Woodlands Stud at the 2017 All Aged Sale for $7,500.

He is now starting to make his mark as a successful broodmare sire.

CROSSES OF GOLD

American Ideal has made a huge impact on harness racing worldwide. He has been a tremendous asset to enhancing the Australasian bloodlines and has been a great cross for many broodmares. He crosses so well with a huge range of broodmare sires but some of the most prominent ones are:

ABERCROMBIE line – it seems American Ideal crosses with all of our major broodmare sires in Australia. The Abercrombie sire line sees plenty of good crosses including ART MAJOR. Others with proven results are ARTSPLACE mares and REAL DESIRE mares.

BETTOR’S DELIGHT – This is a cross that works both ways, but Bettor’s Delight mares crossed with American Ideal are leaving some talented progeny. The likes of American Dealer was bred on this cross. The CAM FELLA line mares as a whole cross well with him, in particular PRESIDENTIAL BALL mares which has already left two of his star progeny in My Hard Copy and Mighty Conqueror

LIVE OR DIE - this cross has of course left one of his best sons in Australasia in Copy That, but has also been a proven cross with other nice horses
