    12 Mar 12
Woodlands Stud, the major sponsor of the Northern Derby couldn’t have been scripted the result any better as American Ideal son, Ideal Scott roared home to win the Gr1 event for his very happy connections last Friday night.   In the words of the driver Todd Macfarlane "He's an amazing horse and a real credit to his trainers. I can tell you I'm in no hurry to get off him," "Winning the Inter Dominion (1999) with Special Force was pretty special and I had some good times with Mac Destroyer but this is right up there with my greatest moment. "It's not a race I will forget in a hurry, " added Macfarlane. Co-trainer John Green said "It doesn't get any better than this. He's a top horse and this is a race I very much wanted to win," (quotes taken from Harnesslink article by Duane Ranger)   Leaving from gate 12, Ideal Scott initially settled back in the field before Macfarlane sent him forward 3 wide & around the field in the trail of the long odds on favourite Smolda. Pacing on from there to face the breeze for a piece, Ideal Scott gained some cover from a son of Bettor’s Delight in Texican as the bell lap sounded. With the field packing at the 400m mark, Macfarlane was looking for a little open space and tipped the son of American Ideal to the outside, first 3 then 4 wide. The previously unbeaten Smolda kicked some 4 lengths clear of the field at the top of the stretch however Ideal Scott & McFarlane would not be denied, exploding down the middle of the stretch to gun down Smolda before fighting off a determined late charge of from Australian colt, Scandalman. The 2700m trip was covered in a slashing 1:58.8, the last 800m in 57.4, the final 400m in 27.9.
