Southwind Tempo smashes WORLD RECORD in Betsy Ross
5yo Bettor's Delight mare Southwind Tempo (Tsunami Hanover-Artsplace) has become history’s fastest female pacer on a 5/8ths mile track on Sunday April 26th with a scorching 1:48.3 mile to win in the $250,000 Betsy Ross at Harrah’s Chester, PA. She was one of 3 horses who had jointly held the previous record of 1:49.3, that mark having been set at Pocono back in 2007 during her 3yo season.
Driven by Tim Tetrick & trained by ex pat. Australian, Ross Croghan, Southwind Tempo won last year’s inaugural Betsy Ross, thus making it back to back victories in the rich Pennsylvania classic. The win was her 27th in 40 lifetime starts & took her earnings to over $1.4 million for prolific owner Jerry Silva & partners, the Let It Ride Stables. Race favourite Darlin’s Delight (Bettor's Delight-Town Pro-Big Towner) dead heated for 2nd with Martha Maxine, some 1 & 1/2 lengths astern.
In the post race interview Tim Tetrick paid tribute to Southwind Tempo. "She’s a great mare. I just feel lucky to get to drive her," "They were going some wicked fractions early. I just sat on the rail & hoped I would get space late. She got out late & when she comes off a helmet she can just absolutely fly." Four Starzz Meliss went to the front out of the gate & held off an early challenge from My Little Dragon before Martha Maxine got to the front with a big move from the back of the field, pacing to the 3/4's in a sharp 1-21.1. Tetrick & Southwind Tempo, initially back in 2nd last place at the 1/2, tipped to the outside as the field rounded the home turn, seized the lead late in the stretch & incredibly she actually began to draw away close to the line. "She’s been first up in her last two races and that’s not really her cup of tea," Tetrick continued. "At least with those first-up miles she got tight & toughened up. It worked out today."

DARLIN'S DELIGHT WINS $123,000 OVERBID FINAL @ THE BIG M
Darlin's Delight (Bettor's Delight-Town Pro-Big Towner) held off the late charge of Chancey Lady to win the $123,000 Overbid Final for pacing mares on Friday night at The Meadowlands. An early battle for the front end pushed 6-5 favourite, Martha Maxine, three-wide through the opening turn as she grabbed the lead from Chancey Lady in a 27.4 opening quarter. Yannick Gingras pulled Darlin's Delight to the outside & she burst forward to grab the lead from Martha Maxine & went to the half in a sharp 54.4. Rounding the home turn only Chancey Lady was within reach of Darlin's Delight & she remained so as they entered the stretch, however no one could catch Darlin's Delight & the great mare edged away to a 1 & 3/4 length win in a sharp 1-50.2.
In the Post Race interview, driver Yannick Gingras said “I was trying to get Andy (Miller and Martha Maxine) behind me,” “I didn’t know which plan was going to work. I had a plan to go to the front but I really didn’t want to have Andy in front of me. His mares sprint is probably as good as mine. I figured that this race would turn into a sprint race and I wanted to have him behind me. Obviously, that didn’t work out. He beat me going to the front, but we’re in the winner’s circle now. “Past the half I was trying to get a breather, trying to slow down,” “Then Andy started screaming that his mare was making a break. From there, I figured the field was getting scattered so I just took off. I heard John (Campbell) coming around the last turn. I was worried about Chancey Lady, she’s a good mare, but my mare just dug in.”
The White Birch Farms owned Darlin's Delight, trained by Jeff Stafford, now has in excess of $2.6 million in career earnings & improved her impressive career slate to 28 wins from 61 starts.

The Derby done for another year.
Woodlands Northern Derby has been won and run, congratulations to the connections of Stunnin Cullen. Much as we would have enjoyed a Woodlands quinella, Percy The Punter (True Lies – Holmes Hanover), third and Highview Tommy (Baptism Of Fire- Christain Cullen), fifth certainly made it an exciting race for us, to have two starters in the Derby from a crop of 25 foals born in NZ 2005 was an outstanding effort. New Zealand filly Delight Me (Estabella – Soky’s Atom) won at Cheviot. This sales series 2YO placegetter now has 3 3YO wins to her name and a mile rate of 1.58.9.
In Australia, winners included dual record holder Vegas Bound (Elite Rena – Seahawk Hanover). The fastest Australasian 3YO Gelding 1.53.8 in 2008 and now the fastest 4YO gelding in Australia 1.53.1 won again at Harold Park giving him five wins (three in a row) from seven starts. Kid Courageous (Talilia-Albert Albert ) also did it again.
In US news Bettor’s Delight’s World Champion 1.49.2 daughter Darlin’s Delight (Town Pro – Big Towner) has continued her distinguished racing career with a start at the Meadowlands last Friday. This tough 6YO mare has won over $US2.5 million and set a scorching 3YO record of 1.49.2. Word is that she is sound as a bell and keen to take on allcomers. JK Reunited (JK On Broadway – Artsplace) a 4YO daughter of Bettor’s Delight completed a clean sweep of the Early Call series at The Meadows winning the final in 1.52.2 the fastest mile this year for a 4YO mare on a 5/8 track. She dominated, winning four races with a combined margin of 22 -3/4 lengths. Her driver Dave Palone feels she is on her way to the top.
Pegasus Spur’s recent winners include 2 wins for Docdor Reece (Shesatrottnjenny – Striking Sahbra) bringing his earnings over $116,000, Less Stress (Stress Factor – Defiant Yankee), set a season record as a 2YO and at 4YO is continuing her winning ways at the Meadows. Still at the Meadows, Persistent Spur (Comebyrail – Overcomer) has been just that by running first then third then first again in his last three starts. Robbie (Marlene – Nearly Perfect) was triumphant at Northfield and Worthy Flyer (Vail – Baltic Speed), Pegasus Spur’s fastest filly 1.56.6 has increased her earnings to almost $130,000 with her most recent win in a sharp time of 1.57.4

EMJAYEM GRAND TAKES THE LONG WAY HOME
In one of the most courageous efforts seen at Bathurst in quite some time, Bettor's Delight 3yo colt Emjayem Grand (Queen Xena-Silent Spring) took out the Western Districts Derby at Bathurst on Boxing Day eve for owners Mick & Kay McIlroy.
Driven by freelance reinsman & regular pilot Glen McElhinney for local horseman Ben Setree, the colt was taken off the gate early, sitting back last for around the 1st mile of the 2130m event. There he remained until, with 500m to travel, McElhinney tipped Emjayem Grand to the outside. The colt went 3 wide down the back straight, was pushed 4 wide at the 3/4's & found himself 5 wide at the point of the home turn. Undeterred, he kept on coming and in an effort reminiscent of his oustanding Bathurst Gold Crown victory as a 2yo, he roared home down the far outside to score by 1.8m from his stablemate Bourgeoisie with Karloo Cuz 3m away back in 3rd. Emjayem Grand's lifetime slate now shows 14 starts, 9 wins, 3 placings & in excess of $112,000 earned.
